Natural soap-making

Natural soap-making requires quite a bit of skill, practice and most importantly, patience When we at Abyssinian Beauty Products make a batch of natural cold-process soap, we must wait 24-48 hours for it to undergo full saponification,  then we cut it into bars before waiting another 4-8 weeks for it to "cure" prior to boxing or wrapping the soap to sell. The 4 - 8 weeks of Curing allows water to evaporate, which improves the lather and longevity of the bar.

This is a time-consuming process, which is why most soap companies have abandoned it in favour of machine-made bars that contain solvents, stearic acid hardeners, and synthetic detergents (SLS) to create quick, mass-produced soap that can be made easily in a factory or workshop setting using  machines.

Many of the soaps made by companies in the country are cheap, machine-made bars with a pretty stamp and wrapping.

Handmade Soaps

At Abyssinian Beauty Cosmetics, everyone of our soaps are handmade. We use cold processing as well as hot processing methods to produce our organic, natural unrefined soaps.

Our soaps do not have the synthetic chemical perfume smells found in commercially made soaps. Our soaps do not have synthetic harmful reagents, in short our soaps are made from unrefined oils and butters with herb extracts and minerals found naturally in nature.

At Abyssinian Beauty Products, our soaps come in a variety of sizes as illustrated above:

Benefits of Onion Oil for hair

One small study published in the Journal of Dermatology indicated that applying onion juice to the scalp might help hair regrow in some people. Researchers found that hair growth started after 2 weeks of using onion juice, which was applied to the scalp twice daily

The antioxidants present in onion oil can help delay the greying of hair. This action actually goes further, since onions can be used to not just delay greying, but reverse it as well. This is because of the presence of catalase in onions that can inhibit the amount of hydrogen peroxide in the roots, and in turn, keep it from turning grey. To prepare a hair mask to deal with grey hair, combine onion oil with lemon juice and mask your scalp and hair with the mixture for 30 minutes. Wash with mild shampoo and follow up with a conditioner to keep any dryness caused by the lemon juice at bay.

1) Can I leave onion oil on my hair overnight?

A. Yes, onion oil can be kept on your hair overnight, just make sure to cover your head with a shower cap to avoid staining your pillows. The smell of homemade onion oil can stay on fabric even after washing. So make sure to add a couple of drops of lemon juice to the washing load of clothing/bedding that did get onion oil on it.

2) How often can I use onion oil on my hair?

A. An onion oil treatment can be used on your hair once or twice a week, never more than that. This is because, if overdone, the high sulphur content of onions can sensitise your scalp to other hair products, sometimes even causing irritation and itchiness.

3) Can onion oil cause hair fall?

A. Onion oil does not directly lead to hair loss, as the nutrients present in it can help boost blood circulation on your scalp and improve hair growth. Any hair loss associated with the use of onion oil is because overdoing head massages with onion oil can lead to scalp infections. This, in turn, causes hair loss in some people.

Benefits of Turmeric Oil for skin:

1. Fight acne naturally: Being a powerful antimicrobial turmeric essential oil makes an excellent acne fighter. The oil helps to naturally dry out pimples and prevent future breakouts. Mix 2-3 drops of turmeric essential oil with a carrier oil such as tamanu oil (hailed as a natural acne cure) and apply to the affected areas daily.

2. Reduce blemishes : Turmeric is often a key ingredient used in anti-blemish and anti-scar skin creams. Use 1-2 drops of turmeric essential oil with a carrier oil such as organic argan oil (a healing moisturizer) to tone skin and fade away blemishes.

3. Treat sunburn: A 2011 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology documented that Curcuma longa extract, or turmeric essential oil used in skin creams, can protect against the harmful effects of the sun. The study concluded that the "photoprotective properties" of the extract "resulted in improvement in skin properties like skin hydration and sebum content." To soothe irritation and redness from sunburn, mix 1-2 drops of turmeric oil with jojoba oil and apply to affected areas.

4. Soften cracked heels: Soak feet in warm water for 10-15 minutes and pat dry with a towel. Mix a few drops of turmeric oil with a carrier oil such as castor oil (an excellent detoxifier) and apply generously to your heels. Repeat weekly, preferably before bedtime for naturally soft heels!

5. Anti-aging regimen: Brimming with antioxidants, turmeric oil can keep your facial skin soft and supple, reduce fine lines and give your skin a healthy glow. Combine turmeric essential oil in a 1:1 ratio with a carrier oil. So for example, if you're using 5 drops of almond oil, mix in 5 drops of turmeric oil and with your fingertips gently massage into wrinkle-prone areas such as the temples, and around the mouth area and nose. Use daily as part of your night time routine for best results.

Handmade Soaps

At Abyssinian Beauty Cosmetics, everyone of our soaps are handmade. We use cold processing as well as hot processing methods to produce our organic, natural  unrefined soaps.

The Art of Soap making

The basic ingredients of most Natural, oil base, handmade soaps are:
  • vegetable oils.
  • 100 percent pure lye.
  • distilled water.
  • essential or skin-safe essential oils (optional)
  • Plant extracts (optional)

For example Black cumin seed oil has antibacterial properties and helps solve acne problem on skin. Black cumin seeds in the soap make perfect peeling that invigorates skin and refreshes its color.

Ingredients: Olive oil, Castor oil, Coconut oil, Water, Sodium Hydroxide, Black cumin seed oil.

How do soaps clean

So, how does soap clean the dirt, grease, and oils off of your skin? To answer that, we'll need a visit to chemistry class.

You've heard the saying - oil and water do not mix. On a chemical level, that's because the fatty molecules that make up oil, grease, and dirt are all non-polar molecules that don't have a charge, while water molecules are polar and have a charge. That's why you get separate layers when you mix cooking oil with water or vinegar. This is important to understand for hand washing, because when disease-causing germs in fecal matter or dirt get on your hands after using the toilet or touching a contaminated surface, they mix with the natural oils on your skin and stay there. When you rinse your hands with water only, it's ineffective against the germy oils that have lodged onto your skin. The water slips right off without mixing, just like it does with cooking oil.

That's where soap comes in. Because soap is salt derived from an oil or fat, it has a unique chemical structure that looks like a balloon. The balloon head is the salt-a charged, polar molecule-and it's connected to a string or tail of non-polar fatty acids. .

The soap molecule can therefore act like a double-agent: the salty end is attracted to water, while the fatty tail is attracted to the dirt or oil. When you mix soap with dirt and water, the soap molecules break up the dirt and the bacteria it contains by forming circles around individual droplets-the fatty chains go in the middle facing the dirt, while the salt balloon tops form the outside of the circle facing the surrounding water. The wheel-like structure formed by the circle of soap molecules around the dirt or oil droplet is called a micelle.

Production of toilet soaps

The production of toilet soaps usually entails saponification of triglycerides, which are vegetable or animal oils and fats. An alkaline solution (often lye or sodium hydroxide) induces saponification whereby the triglyceride fats first hydrolyze into salts of fatty acids. Glycerol (glycerin) is liberated. The glycerin can remain in the soap product as a softening agent, although it is sometimes separated.[8]

The type of alkali metal used determines the kind of soap product. Sodium soaps, prepared from sodium hydroxide, are firm, whereas potassium soaps, derived from potassium hydroxide, are softer or often liquid. Historically, potassium hydroxide was extracted from the ashes of bracken or other plants. Lithium soaps also tend to be hard. These are used exclusively in greases.

For making toilet soaps, triglycerides (oils and fats) are derived from coconut, olive, or palm oils, as well as tallow.[9] Triglyceride is the chemical name for the triesters of fatty acids and glycerin. Tallow, i.e., rendered beef fat, is the most available triglyceride from animals. Each species offers quite different fatty acid content, resulting in soaps of distinct feel. The seed oils give softer but milder soaps. Soap made from pure olive oil, sometimes called Castile soap or Marseille soap, is reputed for its particular mildness. The term "Castile" is also sometimes applied to soaps from a mixture of oils, but a high percentage of olive oil.

Shea Butter + Soap = Great Success

Shea Butter

The top shea nut-producing countries are Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Benin and Togo. "At Abyssinian Beauty products we obtain most of our Shea Butter from Ghana.

High concentrations of fatty acids and vitamins make shea butter an ideal cosmetic ingredient for softening skin. Shea butter also has anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Using shea butter on your body, especially your face, can condition, tone, and soothe your skin.

Because Shea Butter is high in stearic and oleic acids, it is able to produce a long-lasting hard soap with a stable conditioning lather.

Shea Butter is a great choice when it comes to soap making oils. Not only does it perform beautifully in the soap making process, it also has some fantastic natural skin loving benefits. Even when mixed with other ingredients to make soap, Shea butter retains its emollient and anti-inflammatory properties. It creates a creamy, not overly sudsy lather that cleans and moisturizes skin. Shea butter soap is gentle on the skin and can be used by people with sensitive skin- and even on babies.

Above: Shea Butter is one of our essential ingredients when producing Abyssinian beauty products. Like the Coffee Soap above all of our soaps use Shea Butter as a main ingredient.

Shea Butter

Shea butter contains naturally occurring Vitamin A and some levels of Vitamin E, both important to the health of skin, hair, and nails.

Shea butter is very moisturizing and can help in the prevention of wrinkles; and when used regularly, it can help prevent wrinkles and fine lines from forming. It is an anti-inflammatory substance that is used to treat and soothe skin from rashes, sunburns, bug bites, skin allergies, eczema, and itching.

Shea butter can prevent stretch marks if applied regularly during pregnancy. It treats and helps reverse rough, cracked skin- especially on feet and elbows. It can also treat blemishes, as well as small skin wounds. Shea butter strengthens skin by encouraging the skin's own production of collagen- an important component to healthy, youthful skin.

In soap, clay is a super-secret but incredibly effective ingredient. It serves as a natural, gentle exfoliant, as well as a way to remove oils and impurities from your skin. Extra perk: Its silkiness makes shaving easier, too. You can add kaolin clay to soap, or you can choose another variety for different benefits.

Extra perk: Its silkiness makes shaving easier, too. You can add kaolin clay to soap, or you can choose another variety for different benefits.

You can use the same recipe with the different clay ingredients, as it's all about the ratio: Use 2 teaspoons of clay for every pound of oil. For a recipe that has about 53 ounces of oils, you will use slightly more than 2 tablespoons of clay in each of the batches. The oil composition is as follows:

  • 30 percent olive oil
  • 25 percent palm oil (you can substitute lard or tallow)
  • 25 percent coconut oil
  • 15 percent sunflower oil (you can substitute other liquid oils like canola, soybean, or almond)
  • 5 percent castor oil

"I love the exfoliating properties of Ethiopian clay soap. It is a moisturizing abrasive soap with a rich brown texture. Many of  oils and shea butters used in the production of our soaps come from Ghana, South Africa, Morocco, and Kenya. Other ingredients are sourced in South America, India, and beyond. In the future, our aspiration is to grow all of our ingredients in Ethiopia."

How do you treat heat pimples?

Take a slice of lemon, rub it on your face, leave it for a few hours and rinse off with cold water. Lemon cleans the dirt accumulated on the pores, and hardens the sebum. Tea tree oil acts like an antiseptic and helps in removing damaged skin cells by slightly irritating the skin.

How it began

About four years ago, my Dad sat my brother and myself down in the kitchen of our home and told us that he was going to introduce us to the art of soap making.

My Dad began his own soap making experience, three years previously, when he realized that making your own soap gave you  so much creativity and control over what you rub into your skin.

You see, my Dad is a Chemist. He teaches both Physics and Chemistry to pre-university students as part of the International Baccalaureate program at an international school in Ethiopia.

After a demonstration by my father on the art of soap making, I became completely hooked on soap making. It was my introduction to soap making by my father that motivated me to study pharmacy.
